Wikipedia says "ghosts are typically considered to be the souls or spirits of deceased individuals that are believed to exist in a realm separate from the living."
Additionally, they say ghosts are not proven to be real by strict scientific standards. It is suggested they are due to psychological phenomena, misconceptions or due to cultural bias.
Tell that to a person who has seen one!

To me, they represents a real perception of a different time dimension along with its associated energy level.
